I’ve been a long time fan of the WipeOut series. While I like racing games in general, the mix of science-fiction, outrageous colorful environments, blistering speed and trance music pumping through my speakers has always been something truly special to me.

I was stoked when I heard about WipeOut HD getting a 3D patch as part of the very first 3D-enabled games that were offered on the PlayStation 3. The game already kicked ass as it was so I couldn’t wait to see what it would be like in 3D.
The experience sure did not disappoint. The 3D effect is nothing but breathtaking. It’s like you can see half a mile INTO the TV at times. I’d go as far as saying the 3D mode provides a distinct advantage when racing through the tracks of WipeOut at breakneck speeds. It actually gets quite a bit easier to judge turns and to see things coming at you. Another thing that really shines in 3D are the replays after a race. You’re guaranteed to be dazzled by how amazing they look.
While WipeOut HD originally boasts a blistering 60fps in 1080p the graphics have been downgraded a bit to be able to run in 3D. As a result, the game runs in 720p. This doesn’t however have much of a noticeable effect, at least it didn’t for me. The third dimension adds so much to the experience that the net result is still absolutely breathtaking.
The later released ‘Wipeout Pure’ extension pack also works in 3D and arguably looks even better.
WipeOut 3D was one of the very first 3D enabled titles on the PS3 and it looks astonishing. To me this means there’s great promise in the PS3 as a 3D gaming platform. An absolute stellar job by the folks at Studio Liverpool.
If you have a PS3 and a 3D capable television this is a must-have!
Last tax season I did the responsible thing and blew a large chunk of my return on a shiny new 3D television. It’s been an absolute blast so far and things seem to really be picking up lately in terms of available content. Some exciting games are already out and a whole slew of AAA titles are about to be released, mostly on the Playstation 3.

WipeOut HD running in 3D on my TV
I decided to jump into this very niche with this new blog since apparently nobody else is doing this yet. Since I have the equipment and I’m an avid gamer I figured it would be nice to share some experiences on this new blog. I’ll be posting reviews of games I’ve played in 3D with a focus on the 3D aspect of them. Additionally I’ll use this blog to post interesting news on upcoming titles, new technologies and anything else that fits the bill. There might even be a 3D Blu-Ray review every now and then.
So, put on your glasses and… enjoy the ride!
